The Vikings Retreat - Boutique Accommodation of the Year 2026
Mentioned in this post:

Great news for a little corner of the Lincolnshire Wolds. The Vikings Retreat in Donington-on-Bain has just been named Boutique Accommodation of the Year for Lincolnshire at the Prestige Awards 2026, and if you’ve ever stayed there, you probably aren’t surprised.

It’s a self-contained holiday let for two, sitting on The Viking Way long-distance trail and just a short drive from Louth, Horncastle and Market Rasen. Cadwell Park is three miles up the road if that’s your thing, and the Lincolnshire coast is perfectly accessible too. On paper, the location ticks a lot of boxes. In practice, the place itself is what people keep coming back for.

The award judges put it well. Travel correspondent Leo De-Waby visited as part of the Prestige Awards assessment and noted that there’s nothing showy about it. What struck him was the consistency, across review platforms, guests kept mentioning the same things: cleanliness, thoughtful detail, and the feeling that someone had genuinely thought everything through.

“By far the best place we’ve stayed in Lincolnshire” and “we didn’t want to leave” aren’t the kind of comments you get by accident.

What the Vikings Retreat seems to do is the thing that’s actually hardest to pull off: make everything feel easy. The design, the layout, the little details that you notice without quite knowing why. As one guest put it, “the moment we arrived, everything just felt right.”

For a small, independent holiday let in a quiet Wolds village, winning a regional Prestige Award is a proper achievement. Well done to everyone behind it.

If you’re thinking about a break in the area, it’s worth taking a look!.
