Planning a Wedding in and around Louth

What to book and when for a wedding near Louth, from the venue and the legal paperwork to celebrants, suppliers and somewhere for guests to stay.

Most weddings near Louth start with two bookings: the venue, and the registrars or the church. Everything else, from the photographer to the cake, fits around that date. This guide goes through it in order, with links to the venues and local suppliers listed on inLouth.

Start with the Date and the Venue

Summer Saturdays go first, so if you have your heart set on one, ask venues early. A Friday, a Sunday or a winter date usually gives you more choice.

Wedding Venues in and around Louth lists the places licensed for ceremonies, from the Town Hall to country houses and gardens in the Wolds, and those that host receptions only. When you visit, ask whether the venue is licensed for the ceremony itself, whether you can bring your own caterer or drinks, what time the evening has to finish and whether there are rooms for guests.

To marry or form a civil partnership in England you both need to be 18 or over. For a civil ceremony:

  • Give notice at the register office for the district where you've lived for at least the past 7 days. If you live in different districts, you each give notice at your own.
  • Give notice at least 29 days before the ceremony, and hold the ceremony within 12 months of giving notice.
  • Hold the ceremony at a register office or at a venue approved by the council, led by a registrar. A civil ceremony can't include anything religious.
  • Have at least two witnesses with you.

Louth's register office is in the Town Hall on Eastgate. Book the registrars to attend your ceremony through Lincolnshire County Council once your venue has confirmed the date, and see GOV.UK for the full rules.

A religious wedding is arranged with the church, chapel or other place of worship. Church of England weddings have their own way of giving notice, so speak to the vicar first.

Celebrant-Led Ceremonies

An independent celebrant writes a ceremony around your story and can hold it almost anywhere, at a time you choose, such as a garden, a field or a venue that isn't licensed. In England a celebrant ceremony isn't legally binding on its own, so couples also complete the legal part with the registrars, often a short ceremony at the register office before the big day. Celebrants also lead vow renewals and naming ceremonies.

Booking Suppliers

Photographers, bands and DJs can only be in one place on a Saturday, so book them soon after the venue. Every supplier on inLouth was checked against its own website and Google listing before it was added:

Get each quote in writing, with what's included, the deposit and what happens if either of you has to cancel. Some venues ask suppliers for proof of public liability insurance, so check with yours. See them all in Weddings and Events.

Guests Travelling In

Several venues have rooms or lodges, and Where to Stay in and around Louth covers hotels, country inns with rooms, cottages, lodges and caravan parks nearby. Send guests the list early. For getting home after the evening, book taxis well ahead.

The Last Few Weeks

Confirm final numbers and dietary needs with the venue and caterer, and send every supplier the timings for the day and a phone number for someone other than you. Decide who looks after the rings and who pays any balance on the day. Then hand over the clipboard.

Planning Your Wedding: Your Questions

How much notice do you need to give to get married in Louth?

You must give notice at least 29 days before a civil wedding or civil partnership, at the register office for the district where you've lived for the past 7 days. Louth's register office is in the Town Hall on Eastgate. The ceremony must then take place within 12 months.

Can a celebrant legally marry us?

No, in England a celebrant-led ceremony isn't legally binding on its own. Couples also complete the legal part with the registrars, often a short ceremony at the register office before the day, and then have the celebrant ceremony wherever they like.

Can we get married outdoors near Louth?

Yes, several licensed venues near Louth hold ceremonies outside, such as the outdoor pavilion at Brackenborough Lakes and the lawn at Skendleby Hall in spring and summer. For somewhere that isn't licensed, such as a family garden, couples choose a celebrant-led ceremony and do the legal part with the registrars.

What should we book first after the venue?

Book the registrars or the church first, then the photographer and the band or DJ, because they can only work one wedding a day. Caterers, cakes, flowers and cars can usually follow a little later.

How many witnesses do we need at our wedding?

You need at least two witnesses at a wedding or civil partnership in England. They sign the register with you, so make sure they're there for the ceremony itself.
