The Black Horse Inn is one of those places people talk about after they’ve been. Proper pub, proper food, proper welcome. You’ll find it in Donington on Bain, just outside Louth, right in the Lincolnshire Wolds. It’s the sort of setting people come to walk, cycle, switch off a bit, and this place fits that perfectly.

Whether you’re calling in for a pint, sitting down for a meal, or staying the night, it feels relaxed and genuine. No fuss. Just good hospitality done well.

Run by Adam and Victoria since 2015, the pub has stayed true to what a country inn should be. Adam brings years of experience as a trained chef, and Victoria keeps the place grounded in tradition and warmth. Between them, and a small family team, they’ve built somewhere that works just as well for locals as it does for visitors exploring the wider area (East Lindsey, Lincolnshire Wolds).

I stayed here for one night as part of a walk along the Viking Way. I’d been before, but the food I had this evening (beef brisket) was one of the best meals I’d had in years. The pub is cosy, inviting and friendly. Think of village pub with modern quality food and a good selection of local beers.

Food That’s Worth Sitting Down For

Food here isn’t rushed or overcomplicated. It’s cooked fresh, made with good ingredients, and done properly.

You’ll find:

  • Seasonal menus that change through the year
  • Daily specials depending on what’s available locally
  • Proper Sunday roasts that people book ahead for
  • A mix of meat, fish, and vegetarian options
  • Homemade desserts and simple treats that actually feel homemade

Everything is cooked to order. You can tell. It’s the kind of place where you slow down a bit and enjoy it.

A Proper Pub, With Proper Drinks

If you’re just after a drink, you’re covered.

  • Real ales and ciders from local microbreweries, often rotating
  • A well thought-out wine list
  • Teas, coffees, and soft drinks
  • Low and no-alcohol options that aren’t an afterthought
  • Bar snacks if you just want something small

It still feels like a pub. That matters.

I’m sure the rooms are lovely but we only stopped for food and drinks and the experience was wonderful. Set in a quiet village location. Very warm and friendly welcome and very tasty homemade food. Good selection of real ale too. Would definitely recommend a visit. Our pooch was also made welcome and also got a welcome treat!!
