Lenton Bakery at Grainthorpe Mill is an independent, husband and wife-run bakery near Louth, Lincolnshire, producing handmade bread, cakes, pastries and savoury bakes for weekend collection. The full range changes from week to week but regularly includes fresh bread, filled focaccia, chilled cheesecakes and trifles, and savoury items such as sausage rolls and pasties. Customers can pre-order online for collection or simply call in and choose from what’s on the counter that day.

There’s a particular kind of trouble that comes with a bakery counter that offers so much choice. You go in for bread. You leave forty minutes later having somehow also bought a custard slice, a bag of cinnamon buns and a promise to yourself that next time you’ll definitely just get the bread. That’s Lenton Bakery in a nutshell.
Run by a husband and wife team out of Grainthorpe Mill, the bakery bakes everything by hand in their own kitchen. Bread, scones, cakes, pastries, savouries, the lot. What’s on the counter changes from weekend to weekend, but there’s usually a proper spread to get through.
The bread and the basics
Nothing exotic to start with, and that’s rather the point. Milk loaves and milk buns turn up most weekends, along with a fruit version stuffed with apricots, sultanas, raisins, currants and cranberries. Traditional sultana and raspberry scones sit alongside a savoury option made with mature Cheddar and fresh chive, which is the sort of thing that quietly disappears before lunchtime.
The focaccia is where things get a bit more interesting. Basil, mozzarella and herbs is one combination. Roasted red pepper with feta is another. There’s also a green olive and caramelised onion version that’s worth grabbing if you spot it.
And then, tucked in somewhere near the till, the cinnamon buns. Some things really don’t need a sales pitch.
The chiller (yummy treats) cabinet
This is where the trouble starts properly. Vanilla custard slices, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, lemon meringue tart, a proper trifle layered with cake, jelly, custard and fresh cream. Some weekends bring tiramisu made with coffee liqueur, or a strawberry and cream pavlova. Carrot cake cheesecake shows up. So does a Mars cheesecake, which sounds like a joke until you’ve had it.

None of it’s guaranteed week to week, so if you’ve got a particular favourite, it pays to check ahead or put an order in.
Everything else on the counter
Beyond the fridge there’s more to work through. Millionaire’s caramel flapjack, shortbread, triple chocolate or Snickers brownies, rocky road in classic or lemon meringue flavours, Malteser tiffin, Bakewell tart, chocolate chip cookies. All-butter croissants sit alongside things like a toasted marshmallow Biscoff caramel cake, which is exactly as much as it sounds.
Anyone going in for a single loaf of bread should probably accept defeat now.
For the savoury crowd
Not everything on offer is sweet. Pork sausage rolls come in plain or pork and caramelised onion versions, and the pasty selection can run from a straightforward steak through to lamb and mint or bacon, chicken and leek. Quiches vary too, sometimes Brie, bacon and cranberry, sometimes mature Cheddar with onion marmalade.
There are hot breakfast buns as well, filled with free range egg, bacon or Lincolnshire sausage in various combinations, plus croissant sandwiches depending on what’s been baked that weekend.
How to order from Lenton Bakery
Lenton Bakery runs a straightforward pre-order and click and collect service through their online menu. Pick your bakes, choose a collection date, give an idea of when you’ll arrive, and pay when you turn up. Orders need to go in by Thursday evening if you want them ready for the weekend.
You don’t have to book ahead though. Turning up and picking from whatever’s on the counter works perfectly well too, though the earlier you arrive, the more choice you’ll have. By mid-afternoon, some of the popular items have a habit of already being gone.
So many extras on the shelf
Alongside their own bakes, Lenton Bakery stocks a handful of products from other small Lincolnshire producers. There’s honey from Stax of Wax, coffee from Alvingham Coffee Roasters, preserves from Saints & Sinners and flavoured vinegars from Monika’s Special Treats. It’s a nice touch, and it means a trip for bread can turn into picking up a few other bits from other people doing the same sort of thing in the same part of the county.
Worth the trip to Grainthorpe Mill
The exact line-up shifts from one weekend to the next, so nothing here is a promise of what you’ll find on any given Saturday. What it does give you is a proper sense of what Lenton Bakery does well, and there’s plenty of it. Between the bread, the savouries and whatever’s sitting in the chiller that week, it’s easy to see why people drive out to Grainthorpe specifically for this.
If there’s something particular you’re after, ordering ahead removes the guesswork. If not, just turn up and see what’s there. Either way, you’re unlikely to leave with just the one thing you came in for.
